Q: Can I leave my waterfall running over the winter?

A: It's not recommended, especially for slow moving waterfalls which my freeze solid and jam your pump and pipes. Also if your filter gets clogged and you fail to notice, the water in your pipes could freeze and possibly crack your plumbing.

 

 

Q: How deep should my pond be?

A: If you plan to ever have fish it should be at least 3ft. This is not just for overwintering reasons. But also for exercising the muscles
of your aquatic animals and to give them a deep safe haven from predators. A 5ft deep pond is not uncommon.

 

 

Q: Will my pond attract mosquitos?

A: Depends. If your pond has no moving water, then yes. If you have a constant source of water movement propelled by a waterfall or other method, then no, unless you have dead spots of stagnant water. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant non moving water.

Q: Why is my water black?

A: You will most likely notice this after winter. When the ice melts during spring your water will be black. This is caused by decomposing materials over the winter.

 

 

Q: Why is my water green?

A: This happens when you have an excessive growth of algae (a microscopic plant) It may happen when you first set up your pond because there is nothing in your pond to control it. Like plants and fish. This also may happen if your pond is constantly hit by direct sunlight. Algae thrives, like most plants, on sunlight. The easiest and worry free solution is to get a UV sterilizer light.

 

 

Q: Why is my water a reddish color?

A: This is another form of an algae bloom.

 

 

Q: Can I put wildlife like frogs and turtles in my pond?

A: Sure!

 

 

Q: Will my pond water evaporate?

A: Yes, if your pond is hit by direct sunlight most of the day, you can expect to lose 3-6 inches per month.
